Leeds Castle

Today we went to Leeds Castle. It’s somewhere we’ve been quite often, but always in the Summer – it’s just never felt like a Winter place. But we wanted to go somewhere nice today and everywhere else felt too far away, so we set off and we had so much fun!

The house itself is so beautiful, and everytime we go I tell hubby I want us to build our own house.  Not that we would be able to replicate it completely, but we might be able to do a reasonable job on a much smaller scale. The thing I love most is the high ceilings and the large gothic style windows.

And each room had a fireplace with a roaring fire which was a lovely touch.  It felt so cosy yet it had a very open feel.  Most old houses feel really cold and drafter, yet the fires made it feel really snug.  And they  looked so real until hubby pointed out the pipes at the back and we realised they were all gas fires!!

The furnishings and decor were also sumptuous.  The National Trust properties we go to are interesting, but they always seem a bit run down.  However, the interior of Leeds castle looks almost brand new and even the oldest parts have a very modern feel due to the vast amounts of light and pastel colours used.

And the grounds were also very beautiful.  It was too cold to go and watch the falconry display, but we went for tea and cake in the tearoom and then for a wander around the grounds.  And although it was very cold and the moat was even frozen, it was nice to be out in the fresh air.

And the best thing is that now we have paid to go in once, although it was quite expensive at fifteen pounds each, we now get the “keys to the castle” and we’re allowed to go in as many times as we like for the rest of the year!
